The second-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals won for an eighth straight time Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym, rolling past San Jacinto in 98-61 fashion.

It was another slow start and furious finish for fourth-year coach Kris Baumann’s squad, which improved to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in Region XIV Conference. San Jacinto (6-5, 1-2), jumped out an 11-5 lead before being engulfed by a red-hot Cardinal shooting effort.

Freshman point guard Hyron Edwards poured in 21 points to lead the Cardinals. He had two of the Cardinals’ 12 three-pointers.

Josh Stamps, also a freshman, netted 18 points with a team-high four three-pointers. Leon Gilmore III had 16 points, Brandon Holly 11 and Stephen Edwards 10. Ryan Preston tossed in nine.

The Cardinals led 39-27 at the half and were up 67-42 with 13:07 left in the game.

The Cardinals are scheduled to close the first half of their schedule on the road Saturday at Jacksonville. Game time is 4 p.m.

They will be seeking the 1,200th win in school history.

No. 2 Lady Cards stop San Jacinto, 67-47

Using an 18-7 scoring advantage in the third quarter, the second-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals logged a 67-47 Region XIV Conference win against San Jacinto College’s Lady Gators Wednesday night.

With their 72nd straight win at Cardinal Gym, second-year coach Gerald Ewing’s squad improved to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference. San Jacinto slipped to 6-4 and 1-1 marks.

The Lady Cardinals have two games remaining on the first half of their schedule. They travel Saturday to Jacksonville for a 2 p.m. contest and will be in Lufkin to play Angelina the following Saturday, also at 2 p.m.

Alicia Washington scored 15 points to lead the scoring for the Lady Cardinals. Naomi Davenport was also in double figures with 11. Davenport had three three-pointers.

Rainey Kuykendall tossed in nine for the Lady Cardinals, followed by Troi Swain and Christalah Lyons with eight each.

Maya Singleton had six points and eight rebounds.

San Jacinto led 19-14 after one quarter. The Lady Cardinals were up 31-30 at the half.
