Voters in Athens ISD approved a $59.9 million bond Tuesday. The unofficial tally is:

For: 1,483

Against: 996

This vote total is for Henderson County only, however officials say there is no way for the available votes in Van Zandt or Anderson counties to change the final result.

“This is a landmark day not only for Athens ISD, but for our community. The passage of this bond is a referendum by people who chose to do what is needed, even when it’s not easy; who embrace sacrificial giving without excuses or name-calling, because they know someone did the same for them. Rest assured, we will be good stewards of all that we have been given,” said Athens ISD Superintendent Blake Stiles. “I also want to thank our board members, who wisely set us on this course a year ago; our teachers and staff, who together make up one of the finest public school districts in Texas; and to the dedicated members of the Bond BACers, who volunteered countless hours of their time to work on behalf of the school district and its mission — that all students are given the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

The bond will fund construction on almost every campus in the district except for the Middle School. You can find a breakdown of the projects here.

The AISD tax rate is expected to increase about .24 cents with passage of the bond.
