The weekend is over and it’s time to get back to work. Here are seven things to know about the week of Sept. 8.

1. The first Cardinal Pride Luncheon of the new season is scheduled Monday, at Ol’ West Steak House.
The event will begin at noon and the cost of the meal is $10. Between the 2-0 football team and the 14-1 volleyball team there will be a lot to celebrate.

2. The Athens City Council has a busy agenda for its regular meeting 5:30 p.m. Monday night. Council members will hear from the public about the tax rate and budget (very small tax increase from property values increase), and they will interview representatives from two executive search firms re: the hunt for a new city administrator. There is also a chance the council will vote on a new contract with the Athens Municipal Water Authority following an executive session.

3. Speaking of taxes, the Henderson County Commissioners’ Court will hold a public hearing on the county’s small tax rate increase for road and bridge maintenance. That hearing will be 9:15 a.m. Tuesday during the commissioners’ regular meeting.

4. Don’t forget that the county is under a burn ban for at least another week. Ignoring the burn ban is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $500.

5. The Malakoff Tigers (2-0) will travel to Kerens Friday night for the 76th meeting between the two teams. Malakoff delivered a beat down of the Daingerfield Tigers last week in a game that should give Jamie Driskell’s squad some much deserved respect around the state.

6. There is still time to sign up to have a cook team or be a vendor at the Uncle Fletch Festival scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20. Learn more here, and call 903-677-5333 for more information. http://unclefletchfestival.com/2014/08/press-release-added/

7. There are several events scheduled for this week, including: The Rainbow Girls Pancake Breakfast, the Methodist Men BBQ, Praise in the Park and a Gospel Concert. Check out our community calendar for details. https://hendersoncountytexasnow.com/events/
