Each year, 4-H members across the state host a One Day 4-H service project. The project’s mission is to serve the local community where there is a need and to demonstrate the power of youth coming together on this “one day” to give back to their communities and make a difference.
Saturday, Henderson County 4-H members completed a service project at the Henderson County Senior Citizens Center at the fairgrounds in Athens. The members landscaped the grounds of the center with plants that were donated by the Henderson County Master Gardeners, replaced old benches, and provided photographs taken by 4-H members as art for the center. The beautification project was organized by 4-H member Peter Cole, 12, of Timber Trails 4-H club, whose main 4-H project ls horticulture.
“We knew that (the center) needed it,” said Cole. “We wanted to do it as a way to give back for them letting us have our meetings here.”
“I am very impressed by Peter’s initiative to take this project on, talk with community members, seek donations, and see it through to completion. He started the project wanting to give back to the community center that is used by many different groups in the community, including 4-H. Along the way, he has developed leadership skills that will serve him a lifetime” said Carolyn Tyler, Henderson County 4-H agent.
