Cardinals, Lady Cardinals in Regional Tournament

Region XIV tourney logoThe Region XIV Basketball Tournament is scheduled March 3-7 at the Jacksonville ISD gym (old Lon Morris College gym) in Jacksonville.

The Lady Cards are the No. 1 seed in the women’s bracket and will play their first game at 1 p.m. Wednesday. They play No. 8 seed Panola in the quarterfinals.

The Cardinals are the No. 2 seed in the men’s bracket and will play their first game at 6 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals. They will play the Tyler-Lee winner.

GBC Police Report Multiple Drug Arrests

The Gun Barrel City Police Department today announced the following drug arrests.

On March 1 at approximately 2 a.m., Officer Zachary Kennedy of the Gun Barrel City Police Department stopped a vehicle leaving the Best Western Inn in Gun Barrel City for a traffic violation. Information had been received regarding narcotics trafficking at the Best Western Inn. Upon stopping the vehicle Kennedy made contact with the driver, identified as Richard Garcia 26 yoa Quinlan Texas, who advised Kennedy that he had a suspended drivers license. Kennedy also identified the passengers as Keith Merritt, 42, Gun Barrel City and Willie Brown, 29, Scurry. During the stop Kennedy developed probable cause to believe one or more of the occupants was under the influence of methamphetamine. Kennedy conducted a search of the vehicle and located approximately 8 grams of methamphetamine that was linked to Brown, along with a .25 caliber handgun. MHS Spring Flower Sale

The Malakoff High School yearbook staff is kicking off its spring flower sale. The yearbook staff will be selling geraniums starting now through March 16. They will be available for pickup on March 19 after school in the cafeteria. There are four colors available: red, pink, salmon, and white. They are 8-inch pots. The price is $15 each or 2 for $25. Hendricks Wins Second in DAR Quilt Contest

IMG_0136Sarah Maples DAR member Nina Hendricks placed 2nd on the State Level for her quilt that she entered in the Daughters of the American Revolution fiber arts contest. She was presented with a certificate at the George Washington Tea by State Regent Pamela Rouse Wright. There are two hundred chapters in the State of Texas so it was a great surprise and an honor to her when she won second place.
