Athens Election Update

The fallout from the Athens fertilizer fire has me running a little behind on this issue, but the recount in the Aubrey Jones – Charles Elliott race for the Place 2 City Council seat took place last week as expected.

The recount did not change the outcome of the election, Charles Elliott still won, although it did change the vote slightly.

The final totals in the race after the recount were Charles Elliott 624 and Aubrey Jones 614.

It is expected that Mr. Elliott will take his seat at the next City Council meeting.

PWC press release

A favorite annual project for the members of Pinnacle Women’s Club (PWC) is the Book Fair.  The purpose of the Book Fair is to donate books to the Kindergarten and 1st grade students in the Malakoff ISD. This year, there were 202 students who each received five books. The age appropriate books were delivered shortly before the end of the school year so the students would have summer reading materials. The student’s books were distributed in book bags which had been donated by Lily Enterprises of Athens, the owners of McDonald’s in Malakoff and Athens.

The PWC members were especially delighted when they entered one of the 1st grade classrooms because the students stood and sang the “Happy, happy, happy” song while dancing.   Other classes had made ‘thank you’ cards for the PWC members. This was an awesome and very much appreciated welcome!

TxDOT Update – Week of June 2

After being delayed by rain this past week, TxDOT contract crews on Monday are scheduled to begin seal coat operations on the following roadways:

– West Loop 7 between FM 59 and FM 1616

– FM 59 between SH 19 in Athens and FM 753

– US 175 east of Athens between FM 804 and FM 315

TxDOT’s seal coat program seals nearly 300 centerline miles of roadway each summer, extending the maintenance-free service life of those roadways by as much as 10 years or more. Local TxDOT crews have been preparing sections of these roadways over the past year in preparation for sealing.

Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible to avoid long delays associated with the work.
