AISD press release

Veterans Day is Wednesday, and Athens ISD has been at the center of veteran awareness since posting the viral video “Zoey’s Reunion” to their Facebook page on Friday. With more than 20,000 views and counting as of Monday, the video (a surprise reunion between a kindergartner and her sailor father during an assembly) has touched the hearts of people far outside Henderson County.

“It was a lovely moment, and we were honored by the Barr family for the opportunity to witness it,” said Toni Garrard Clay, AISD communications specialist. “It also came at a perfect time, being only a few days ahead of Veterans Day.”

Athens ISD regularly invites area veterans to be included in a number of recognition opportunities throughout the district. The following events are open to the public on Veterans Day. Young people are always delighted by the presence of those who have faithfully served our country.

  • Bel Air Elementary, 215 Willowbrook Drive, will host the seventh annual Veterans Day Parade. The parade leaves the campus beginning at 8:30 a.m. and winds through the neighborhood. Students will march with signs, accompanied by the Athens High School band, cheerleaders and drill team. All veterans are welcome and will be provided transportation on the parade route. If the weather is inclement, it is possible the parade may be postponed or re-scheduled. If there is any question, call 903-677-6980.
  • Athens Middle School, 6800 Hwy. 19 South, will hold a community wide assembly beginning at 2:10 p.m. The band will perform patriotic music, and all veterans in attendance will be recognized. Retired Air Force Tech. Sgt. Porfirio Mata will address those in attendance.
  • South Athens Elementary, 718 Robbins Road, invites veterans to a breakfast and fourth-grade performance of patriotic songs at 8 a.m.
  • Central Athens Elementary, 307 Madole Street, invites all veterans to enjoy dessert and a short musical performance at 1:30 p.m. Veterans in attendance will be recognized by students on an honor walk.
