A tradition of excellence continues for the Student Government Association at Trinity Valley Community College.

The college’s SGA has again been named Region III Chapter of the Year by the Texas Junior College Student Government Association. The award qualifies the SGA chapter to compete for chapter of the year for the TJCSGA, which is composed of six regions and 72 member colleges.

The announcement was made during the Region III TJCSGA meeting held at Texarkana College in late February. The top state award is scheduled to be announced at the state convention April 9-12.

TVCC, one of the most active student government associations in the state, was recognized for its strong participation in community service projects and chapter activities. Student government members this term participated in projects including a Thanksgiving food drive, Senior Olympics and the Meals of Kindness food ministry sponsored by Eastern Hills Church of Christ and various support efforts at events such as the Kiwanis Pancake Day and the Hope Springs Water Color Run.

The campus group also hosts a number of activities for its members, including bowling and movie nights, throughout the fall and spring semesters.

“SGA is a great opportunity for our students to showcase their hard work,” said TVCC Student Life Specialist James Jones. “Winning chapter of the year was a way to show how important their community is to them to their fellow region schools. Now they get the chance to display that same passion to help others on the state level.

“Not only do they get to showcase their community services but they get to display how their voices matter in SGA as well. Whether it is serving on the Executive Board on the Region of state level but also pushing amendments and bills to be considered. They want to pave the way for future students.

“I’m proud of them in all of their accomplishments now and in the future.”

“The SGA provides a valuable opportunity for students to participate in what happens at the college,” said TVCC President Dr. Glendon Forgey. “Not only do the SGA students get involved in college issues, but they also learn of the significance of community service by the various activities in which they contribute their time and efforts.”

TVCC SGA officers for 2014-2015 are Hannah Feinsod, president; Albanee Martin, vice president; Kolby Meshack, secretary; Mahad Asim, treasurer; Terrance Jackson, parliamentarian; and Masaya Rowe, freshman representative.
