TVCC men beat Paris, lead conference

Trinity Valley Community College sports notes:

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The seventh-ranked Cardinals picked the perfect time for a complete-game performance.

The Region XIV Conference-leading Cardinals played shutdown defense en route to a 71-44 win on the road Saturday against the Paris Junior College Dragons, avenging an earlier 96-82 Cardinal Gym loss.

As a result of the win, the Cardinals upped their season mark to 22-3 and conference record to 13-1, keeping them two games clear of Tyler and three of Paris in the East Zone of the conference.

The Cardinals have six games remaining, starting with Bossier Parish at home Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals are also scheduled to be at home Saturday against Panola at 4 p.m.

The Cardinals held Paris to 16 points in the first half, taking a 34-16 lead at the intermission.

Wendell Mitchell had 21 points, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the floor and hitting 5-of-5 from the free throw line. He also had nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

Joining Mitchell in twin figures were Jaime Echenique with 11 and Lorenzo Phillips and Andre Ibarguen 10 each. Ibarguen also had 14 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The 11th-ranked Lady Cards outscored Paris 24-6 in the third quarter Saturday afternoon in Paris to fuel a 75-54 Region XIV Conference victory.

With the win, the Lady Cards (22-3) maintain a share of the conference lead with Jacksonville and Panola, improving to 12-3. It also avenged a 72-71 loss to Paris at Cardinal Gym in December.

The Lady Cards are scheduled to be at home Wednesday against Bossier Parish at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, they host Panola in a key conference clash at 2 p.m.

Rodrea Echols poured in 23 points to lead the Lady Cards. She also had six rebounds and three assists.

Mercedes Brooks finished with 13 points and five steals. Jada Wright and Tyasia Moore had 10 points each.

Tra’dayja Smith had eight points and dished out seven assists.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Cardinals (4-4) had Saturday’s doubleheader at home against Eastern Oklahoma canceled due to the weather.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to take to the road this week for games in Mississippi and Alabama. Thursday, they face Southwest Mississippi and Friday and Saturday they are scheduled to compete in the Sun Chief Classic in Gulf Shores, AL, playing four games.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be at home on Tuesday, Feb. 20 against Iowa Western in doubleheader action starting at 2 p.m.
