While the NFL was at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Saturday, wrapping up the annual player pageant called the draft, an elite Texas football team was actually using its field for its intended purpose.

And, no, I don’t mean the Cowboys.

The TVCC Cardinals finished their spring practice schedule with the Annual Spring Game at Bruce Field in Athens Saturday morning.

The game included players who are out of high school, many who were with the team last season, but also some walk-ons and new players who are trying to find a spot on the roster.

First-year Head Coach Sherard Poteete said the No. 1 goal was to get out of the spring healthy (“Which we did for the most part,” he said) and to get game-situation reps on tape for player evaluation.

Two quarterbacks who got a lot of work during the game were Colt Atkinson and Colby Kizzie. Atkinson saw some game action for the Cardinals in 2017.

Two area players who Poteete singled out for praise were Van RB Aphonso Thomas and Malakoff WR QT Barker.

“It was good to see some local guys playing well,” Poteete said.

In addition, Poteete said he was really happy to see the abundance of big plays on both sides of the ball Saturday.

With this portion of the offseason behind them, the players now look toward finals this week.

“We had a good spring, now it is time to finish strong in the classroom,” said Poteete. “Then they get to go home and get away from us for awhile and they’ll be back here before you know it in July.”

The Cardinals are set to open the 2018 season Saturday, Aug. 25 at Bruce Field against Snow College in the annual Battle In The Valley, sponsored by Virtual Communication Specialists. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
