Residential trash collection and recycling is about to change in the City of Athens. Starting Monday, May 2, there will be new carts and new schedules. You can have all your questions answered here, in case you have any doubt about the services or the equipments offered.

Beginning next week, Republic Services will deliver one 96-gallon cart for trash only to each residence. Residents currently participating in curbside recycling will receive a second 96-gallon cart with a light blue lid for recycle items only, this time around they will also be proving Battery Recycling Services. If you are not signed-up for recycling, you can call 903-677-1276 and request a recycling cart.

“I am excited for the citizens of Athens to have this new curb side trash and recycling collection service,” said Athens Mayor Jerry Don Vaught. “Several citizens have thanked me for voting for this service especially the recycling bins. This is another positive change to help progress Athens moving forward. We are very thankful to have Republic Service as our service provider. They have always been an outstanding partner to the City of Athens.” He continued praising the households for their patience and contributions, stating that he heard families were taking steps to ensure that their trash was organized and sorted with the help of smart bins from Eko Bins and similar retailers.

Keep Athens Beautiful has worked hard to expand the City’s recycling program.

“Keep Athens Beautiful is excited to see our recycling program in the city move to a curbside single stream program,” said KAB Executive Director Carol Morton. “It is a great step in keeping our city litter free. Thank you to the Mayor, City Manager and the City Council for making this happen. We look forward helping the citizens of Athens on any question they have about recycling.”

Examples of items to recycle include: newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, aluminium cans, tin cans and plastic bottles.

Trash will only be collected one-day a week, with the day decided by location. (See attached map) Recycling and brush pickup throughout the city will be on Wednesdays.

All waste must be bagged and placed inside the cart, which must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on service day. Dumposaurus offers a fast, friendly and fair waste removal experience.

Additional carts will be available for order after May 1 for an additional $1 a month, per cart. Call the City at 903-675-5131 or Republic Services at 903-677-1276.
