Staff reports

Henderson County has a new AgriLife Agriculture Agent after Commissioners Court approved the hiring of Spencer Perkins Tuesday morning.

“I am pleased to have Spencer join our County Extension Family in Henderon County. He will be a great asset to the county and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service,” said Shelia Lewis, District Extension Administrator. “I feel certain he will do an excellent job because of his enthusiasm for providing quality, educational programs and working with the public.”

During Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting, County Judge Richard Sanders said, “I think it is very good that we have someone like Spencer who grew up in East Texas, who grew up 26 miles north of us here in Athens, pretty close to Henderson County. His wife is from Athens, his family is from Athens, he has a very well respected family here. In my view, I think we are very fortunate to have him.”

Perkins earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University with a major in Animal Science. Most recently he has been a County Agent in Camp County.

“I am looking forward to moving back closer to home and getting involved in the Henderson County community,” Perkins said. “It was very encouraging to meet the staff and other agents in the county office. I think we will have a great team that will provide quality educational programs for the community.”

Perkins first day is scheduled for October 2. He is just the third Agriculture Agent to work in Henderson County.

The Agriculture Agent position came open when Rick Hirsch passed away in April 2016.
