tax freeIt is time to get the state’s annual sales tax holiday on your calendar. This year’s event will be Friday,Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9 -11.

The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales tax, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend during the weekend.

“Texas families can take advantage of the sales tax holiday when doing their back-to-school shopping,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs. “The tax holiday applies to a variety of items ranging from pens to jeans to help shoppers around Texas save some of their hard earned money.”

Lists of apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax free can be found on the Comptroller’s website at www.TexasTaxHoliday.org.

This year, shoppers will save an estimated $74.1 million in state and local sales taxes during the Sales Tax Holiday.

The dates for the tax holiday weekend are established by the Legislature in the state tax code. The sales tax holiday has been an annual event since 1999.
