Rootseekers press release

Longtime Rootseekers member Ruth Shelton, who now lives in Crowley, Texas, came all the way to the Tri-County Library to tell us the history of Rachel Donelson Jackson. Ruth said she always felt sympathy for Rachel when she found out about her history. Seems the American people treated Rachel pretty mean when her husband Andrew Jackson was running for President of the United States in 1828.

Rachel was born in 1767 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the eighth of eleven children. In 1779 the entire family moved to East Tennessee, as part of an expedition that was going to settle in the Middle Tennessee area. Rachel traveled with her family by flatboat to this new land, arriving in April 1780.

By the time she was 18 she had married Lewis Robards in Kentucky, a marriage that would cause her continual grief and would in later years be used by Andrew Jackson’s political enemies. Robards was subject to irrational fits of jealous rage and when Rachel had her fill she left him and went back to her parents in Tennessee. Believing that Robards had obtained a divorce she married Andrew Jackson. Two years later, the couple discovered that the divorce was not granted. She died at the Hermitage in 1828. Today, the 1828 election is considered by some historians to be one of the meanest in American history. Jackson was convinced that the strain of the personal attacks on her character was directly responsible for her demise. In his own words, “May God Almighty forgive her murderers as I know she forgave them. I never can.”

Ruth was born in Eustace but lived in Dallas and California from 1940-1986 before returning to the lake area.

She has one son who lives in Benbrook, 2 grandsons and 3 great grandchildren living in Ft. Worth. Ruth also had a birthday on the 14th and was surprised with a birthday cake from the society,
