Obituary: Margaret O’Brien

O'Brien, MargaretMemorial services for Margaret O’Brien, 69, of Athens are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 at Bethel Christian Church in Bethel Community with Rev. Mike Baldwin officiating.

Ms. O’Brien went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 in Athens.

Margaret Helen O’Brien was born Sept. 10, 1946 in Athens, the daughter of Thomas Benton Harris and Mary Elizabeth Sims Harris. From a very early age, Margaret could tame and ride a very large horse with nothing but a sugar cube and a soft cotton rope. Not only was she a horse whisperer but the horses seemed to whisper back. She used the same technique on dogs and human beings, a sugar cube and a soft cotton rope. Margaret also loved hunting and collecting many forms of antiques. She could find a piece of furniture under a wood pile or a diamond ring in a handful of gravel. Margaret enjoyed her time with her late husband Pat. Most of all she loved her time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was very special to hear them call her “Maw”. Tall grandsons towering over her tiny physique actually made the name seem really appropriate for her. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and will be missed by all she knew and loved.

She is preceded in death by her husband James “Pat” O’Brien, her parents and son Rodney Lee Porter.

She is survived by one daughter Teresa Porter Harris of Athens; one son Russell “Rusty” Dale Porter and wife Melinda of Rockwall; one brother Tommy Harris and wife Bernice of Athens; six grandchildren, Matthew Porter, Dustin Harris, Daniel Harris, Brian Porter, Porter Baker, Jonathan Porter and several great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6-7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens.
