Press release

The deadline is fast approaching to nominate someone for the Athens Hornet Hall of Fame. Applications must be submitted no later than Thursday, April 20 — either by midnight online or delivered to the Athens ISD District Support Center (104 Hawn Street) by 4:30 p.m. No late applications will be considered.

The Hornet Hall of Fame was established in 2016 to recognize former students and employees who have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields and/or have made notable positive contributions to their communities. Those inducted into the Hornet Hall of Fame should serve as examples of character and achievement for all who follow. The Hornet Hall of Fame is not dedicated to athletic achievement. Plans are underway to launch a means of exclusively honoring those former students who were or are outstanding athletes. Posthumous nominations are accepted.

A nominee for the Hornet Hall of Fame should be a graduate of Athens High School OR have attended the majority of K-12 at Athens ISD OR have been a longtime employee whose contributions within Athens ISD left a lasting positive impact; have graduated from high school at least 10 years prior to the year of nomination (2007 or earlier for this year’s selection) or have left employment from AISD at least three years prior to the year of nomination (2014 or earlier); be free of any felony convictions; be able to attend the induction ceremony held the evening of Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017 (exceptions may be made by committee for remarkable circumstances); be successful in his/her field of endeavor as determined by the selection committee as demonstrated by: accomplishments worthy of being modeled by our students; standards of personal character recognized by society as acceptable, appropriate and worthy; positive influence to others; *participation in community organization or community service; *high school or college honors, recognition and activities. Current members of the Hornet Hall of Fame are Vivian Anderson Castleberry, class of 1940; Drew Douglas, class of 1977; and R.C. Fisher (1888-1932), a former principal and community leader. Information on all three can be found on the district website: www.athensisd.net.

The simplest way to nominate an individual is to go to the district website (see address above) and follow the prompts. Forms may also be picked up at the District Support Center (104 Hawn Street). Again, the deadline for submission is Thursday, April 20. For more information, call AISD Communications Coordinator Toni Clay at 903-677-6988 or email [email protected].
