New recycling, trash schedule gets test in Athens

By Michael V. Hannigan

A pilot program by the City of Athens, Republic Services and Keep Athens Beautiful aims at increasing recycling and reducing the stress on city streets.

Currently, Republic collects trash twice a week and recycling once a week in Athens. The service has additionally taken a contract from a cheap roll off dumpster rental to ease the process. Under the program being tested, the schedule will be trash pick-up on Tuesday and recycling on Friday.

The key is a blue, 90-gallon cart for the recycling, which replaces the small bins currently in use. The new carts are big enough to hold a week’s worth of recycling. Republic has distributed about 250 of the new bins around the city for a test run.

Keep Athens Beautiful Executive Director Carol Morton said her group is very excited about the program.

“Recycling is just so important to our environment, to our future,” she said. “Recycling is just an important part of the future for our world and Athens.”

Athens City Administrator Philip Rodriguez said in addition to the obvious benefits of recycling, the city benefits on the bottom line by eliminating one of Republic’s routes.

“Every year, street budget is a big concern of ours, street repairs are a big concern of ours, and it is just fact that if we can keep the heavy trash trucks, recycling trucks off the road more often, then we will actually keep our streets in better condition,” he said.

  1. The larger recycling bins are a great idea. I would be willing to pay $50 to get one.

However, reducing the garbage collection frequency to once per week is a terrible idea. The smell of week old trash in the bin during the hotter months would be horrible, not to mention the increase of insects (maggots).

If the new plan is approved, can we expect lower trash rates since the company will be saving a quarter of their costs by eliminating a quarter of their routes?

Keep the twice per week garbage collection and offer the large recycling bins (at a premium if necessary). The people who are serious about recycling would pay for the convenience. Those who don’t care about recycling wouldn’t use the new bins even if you offered to come take it to the curb for them.
