At approximately 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, the Athens Police Department responded to a shooting in the 700 block of Robbins Road. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Cedrick Alvin Collins, 23, of Malakoff, lying on the ground beside his vehicle with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

At least one witness in the area reported hearing gunshots and seeing two subjects fleeing the area on foot, northwest on Robbins Road. The fleeing subjects appeared to be black males; one with light skin tone and one with darker skin tone.

Collins was transported by ambulance to East Texas Medical Center-Athens where he died a short time later. Henderson County Justice of the Peace Randy Daniel conducted an inquest and ordered Collins’ body sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

Athens police detectives, with the assistance of the Henderson County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers, are conducting the investigation. Collins’ vehicle and its contents are being processed for evidence. At this time, it is unknown if the subjects fleeing the vicinity are directly related to the shooting. However, it is believed that the two subjects were known by Collins.

Anyone with information relating to this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Adam Parkins at 903-675-5454. Tips can also be reported to the Henderson County Crime Stoppers by calling 800-545-8477, or online at www.hccstips.com.
