Lady Cards ready to host Thanksgiving Classic

The No. 2-ranked Lady Cards returned from the WNIT Classic with their unbeaten record intact.

The Lady Cards wrapped up play in the annual Midland College event with a 62-51 win against No. 10 Odessa. They also had wins against Midland, 64-61, and No. 5 Salt Lake, 51-50 in overtime.

The three wins improved the Lady Cards to 7-0 on the year.

Mercedes Brooks tossed in 17 points to lead the way against Midland. Michal Miller had 14 and Tyasia Moore and Dajah Daniel 10 each. Daniel also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Against Midland, Brooks had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Miller had 15 points. Miller hit a three-pointer with five seconds left to give the Lady Cards the win.

Rodrea Echols led the scoring against Salt Lake with 11. Moore netted 10.

The Lady Cards are scheduled to open Region XIV Conference play and begin a five-game homestand Tuesday against Blinn at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday they host the annual Budke/Serna Thanksgiving Classic, playing Arkansas Baptist at 7 p.m. Friday and Hill at 6 p.m. Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Cardinals went 2-0 in the TVCC Classic at Cardinal Gym over the weekend, rolling to wins against Texas Riders, 108-75, and Southwestern Christian, 103-58.

The two wins raised the Cardinals season record to 6-1, extending their winning streak to six.

In the win against Texas Riders, Damari Parris led five players in double-digit scoring with 18 points. Yildon Mendoza had 17, Robinson Idehen 15, Jaime Echenique 14 and Jauron Freeman 10.

The Cardinals outscored Texas Riders 64-34 in the second half.

Wendell Mitchell was the top scorer against Southwestern Christian. Kevin Cheatham had 14, Idehen 13, Andre Ibarguen 11 and Mendoza 10.

The Cardinals were up 49-29 at the half.

It’s a busy Thanksgiving week for the Cardinals. Tuesday, they travel to Temple in an attempt to avenge a 111-104 season-opening loss to Temple. It’s then off to Florida to play Pensacola State and No. 2-ranked Northwest Florida State.
