Lady Cardinals take third place in WNIT

The second-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals posted a 2-1 mark in the annual WNIT Tournament at Midland College over the weekend, claiming a third-place finish with a 75-61 win against Iowa Western.

Second-year head coach Gerald Ewing’s Lady Cardinals (4-1) are scheduled to be on the road again Tuesday, going to Brenham to take on Blinn in their conference opener. Action tips off at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Cardinals are schedule to make their home opener Friday at 7 p.m. against Arkansas Baptist in the opening day of the Budke/Serna Thanksgiving Classic. They will face Hill at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Maya Singleton paced the Lady Cardinals in the win against Iowa Western with 18 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds.

Malayasia McHenry poured in 16 points in the win and nabbed 12 rebounds. Naomi Davenport also had a 12-rebound game to go along with 12 points.

The Lady Cardinals led 36-30 at the half.

In the opening game of the tournament, the Lady Cardinals were a 75-57 winner against Garden City behind Christalah Lyons’ 22-point performance. Singleton had 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Cardinals suffered a 53-52 loss to Salt Lake in the semifinals, shooting 22 percent from the floor.

Davenport was the top scorer with 14 points. Lyons had 10. Singleton had nine points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Cardinals were down 31-20 at halftime.
