Press release

Gun Barrel City will welcome Texas Turf Titans and Sod Slingers from far and wide as the Lone Star Mower Racing Association (LSMRA) hosts the STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series, June 11-12.

The Gun Barrel City Economic Development Corporation will welcome racers from the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA), the nation’s oldest and largest lawn mower racing sanctioning body, celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2017.

“We’re going to tear up the turf in Texas,” said Gun Barrel City resident and LSMRA President Mike Howell, also known as “Mr. Mowyagi.” “The Gun Barrel track is one of the LSMRA’s favorite venues and we can’t wait to show it off to our racing friends form across the country.

The Gun Barrel City race is estimated to draw 300-400 spectators to the Cedar Creek Reservoir area. The town acquired its name when farmers first settled in 1969, they noted that the road through the town looked “straight as a gun barrel.

Racers and national staff from Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and South Carolina will be on site to rock and mow. The race will host various charity fundraisers such as Toys for Tots and there will be cookouts and family fun.

Gun Barrel is known for its hospitality, and with the upcoming race, the tourism industry will see a major rise. And it’s no stranger to big events either. Last year’s July Fest saw approximately 5,000 attendees. Fans will be sure to have a great time in Gun Barrel. The races will last all day and will showcase various classes from IMOW to FX.
When asked his favorite part, Gun Barrel native and lawn mower racer Michael Howell said “Seeing excitement on people’s faces when we crank these things up!”
