Cross Roads Speech and Debate Team Competes in Tyler

The Cross Roads Speech and Debate team competed at its inaugural tournament of the year and in school history this past Saturday at the John Tyler High School “Angel” Debate Tournament in Tyler. At the tournament, the Cross Roads Debate team finished in 3rd place overall behind 5A Lindale High School and 4A Mabank High School. There were 19 high schools represented at the tournament including Tyler Lee, John Tyler, Lindale, Carthage, Pine Tree, Royse City, etc. Cross Roads High School was the smallest school represented and the only school that was below the 3A classification.

Eight out of 13 students earned medals for their efforts in competition. Cross Roads High School students finished 4th, 5th, and 6th in Public Forum Debate (PFD). They also finished 4th and 5th in Congressional Debate. Student competitors at the tournament included Senior: John McAteer, Juniors: Jeffrey Anderson, Luke Carnes, Rachael Cooper, Katie Harris, Nathan Hearne, Rebecca Kramer, Hunter McCulloch, Sophomore: Justin Yachinich, Freshmen: Chelsea Baker, Julia Harris, Gabrielle Loden, and Taylor Long. Sophomore Alex Dickson served as our team’s “Angel” at this tournament. ​The speech and debate team at Cross Roads is coached by Chris Dickson

An Angel tournament is a tournament where a veteran debater is allowed to enter debate rounds to assist novice (1st year) debaters.
