The Ladycats, representing the Henderson County Girls Softball Association, finished as the TTAS 12u District 8 Champs on Wednesday night.  Pictured with the girls are their coaches, Clint Davis and Shane Stanfield. This photo was taken a little after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, in Brownsboro, after the Ladycats battled back in three back-to-back-to-back games, in over 6 hours of playing time, to claim the 1st place spot.  The team will move on to the TTAS 12u state tournament the week of July 15. Now you can take a ride in the most famous warbird fighter in history, the P-51 Mustang! Known as the aircraft that won the war, The P-51 was the fastest single engine fighter of WWII with speeds over 400 mph.

The Cavanaugh Flight Museum P-51 Mustang, The Brat III, is even more special as it is an actual combat veteran! That’s right, the airplane you are sitting in for the ride actually saw combat over 70 years ago.

P-51 rides will be available at Tyler Pounds Airport this Friday July 5 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday July 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. before the airshow.

Guthrie sentenced to life for 2012 murder

Jackie Martez Guthrie, 23, of Frankston was sentenced to Life in the penitentiary last month after pleading guilty to the July 2012 shooting death of Chantel Barrett.
Barrett was found dead outside a Coffee City residence by police on Thursday, July 19, while responding to a call about gunshots. Guthrie, 23, was quickly identified as a suspect and a manhunt was initiated. Guthrie was believed to have also kidnapped 19-year-old Tiffany Hurd, who was eight months pregnant with Guthrie’s child at the time.

Approximately 24 hours later, Guthrie was spotted by former classmates vacationing in Galveston and was taken into custody without incident. Guthrie had in his possession what prosecutors believed was the weapon used to shoot Barrett. Henderson County District Attorney’s Investigators along with an investigator from the Henderson County Sheriff’s office traveled to Galveston to interview and transport Hurd back to Henderson County.

Firefighters support each other

Scholarship event planned for Dr. Ray Hargrove-Huttel

Those who knew Dr. Ray Hargrove-Huttel professionally remember her as competent, knowledgeable and compassionate. But she was also always ready to share a laugh or tie on a pair of bowling shoes to have a little fun.

Hargrove-Huttel was a nursing instructor for at the Trinity Valley Community College Health Science Center in Kaufman for 22 years from 1987 until 2009. After leaving TVCC, she took a position as an Associate Dean of Nursing at West Coast College in North Hollywood, Calif., and later became an associate professor at the Texas Tech University School of Nursing.

Hargrove-Huttel died on Dec. 23, 2012, after a battle with cancer.

Six months later, her family has teamed up with TVCC to dedicate a scholarship in her memory. And they are using her favorite pastime – bowling – to help.
