TVCC Sports Notes: Lady Cards split double header

A doubleheader split against Hill College Tuesday night at Cain Park moved the Lady Cardinals’ season record to 12-6.

The Lady Cardinals prevailed 5-0 in Game 1 and fell 7-6 in Game 2.

Erica Jordan slammed a three-run home run in the first game to spark the Lady Cardinals.

In the second game, Marci Seymour, Shelby Reddington, Celeste Montoya and Candise Wise had two hits each. Montoya and Wise each drove in a run.

The Lady Cardinals carried a five-run lead into the top of the seventh inning.

Coach Ashley Johnston’s squad is scheduled to travel Saturday to Lufkin to play Angelina in a doubleheader. Action begins at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The No. 1-ranked Lady Cardinals go after a 42nd straight Cardinal Gym win today against Angelina at 5:30 p.m. The game will be webcast on the Cardinal Sports Network at www.tvcc.edu.

The Lady Cardinals are 26-1 on the year and 13-0 in conference. Angelina is 16-11 and 8-5.

The Lady Cardinals were an 86-60 winner against Angelina earlier this season in Lufkin.

The Lady Cardinals have an open date Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Cardinals take to the road tonight, going to Carthage to face Panola. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Cardinals are 16-10 on the season and 7-8 in conference. Panola is 8-18 and 0-16.

Last month at Cardinal Gym, the Cardinals rolled to an 80-59 win against Panola.

The Cardinals are scheduled to be at home Saturday against Paris at 4 p.m. The Cardinal Sports Network will webcast the game.

REGION XIV TOURNAMENT

In case you missed the announcement last week, the dates of the Region XIV Basketball Tournament have been changed to Tuesday-Saturday, March 5-9.

The event will be held on the campus of UT Tyler.

Lady Cards softball sets record

The Trinity Valley Community Lady Cardinals matched a school record for consecutive wins in the first game of a softball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Cain Park with a 4-2 decision against North Central Texas College.

Things didn’t go as well in Game 2 for Coach Ashley Johnston’s squad, which fell 6-3 to see a six-game win streak halted and drop to 11-5 on the year.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be back in action Wednesday on the road against Hill College. Action begins at 1 p.m.

Chantelle Whitehead and Chyna Phipps had two hits each in the Game 1 win, Whitehead drove in a run. Candise Wise had a hit and a RBI.

In the second game, Erica Jordan led the Lady Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-3 and driving in a run.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to travel Saturday to Lufkin to play Angelina in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

The next home game for the Lady Cardinals is March 14 against Navarro.

TVCC Sports Notes: Softball on a roll

The Lady Cardinals have reeled off five straight wins, which is one short of tying the school record.

Coach Ashley Johnston’s squad is 10-4 on the season after sweeping Grayson and Grambling State in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Cain Park. The Lady Cardinals defeated Grayson 3-1 and 10-1 and Grambling State 4-3 and 4-1.

Against Grayson, Erica Jordan and Shelby Eddington had two hits each in Game 1, Eddington had two doubles. In the second game, collecting two hits each were Melissa Boland, Jazmine Hicks, Taylor Wilson and Thomas. Boland slammed a walk-off grand slame home run, ending the game via the eight-run rule. The top hitter was Andrea Sitter, who went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases.

Jordan went 3-for-3 in the first win against Grambling State. Chyna Phipps went 2-for-3. In the second game, Melissa Billingsley and Wilson had two hits each and Jordan Olivares and Chantelle Whitehead one each. Olivares had a triple and Wilson a double.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be at home today in doubleheader action against North Central Texas. Action starts at Cain Park at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The No. 1-ranked Lady Cardinals outscored Jacksonville 31-7 in a 10-minute stretch in the second half Saturday afternoon to pull away for a 76-57 win.

The Lady Cardinals, 26-1 overall and 13-0 in conference, trailed 28-27 at the half.

Krystle Henderson led a balanced Lady Cardinal scoring effort with 16 points. Savannah Carter had 14, followed by Shannon Smith and Victoria Wells with 12 each and Roddricka Patton and Adut Bulgak with 11 each.

The Lady Cardinals hit 26 of 30 free throws.

The Lady Cardinals now close the regular season with three straight games at Cardinal Gym, where they have won 41 straight games. First up is Angelina at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Wednesday’s game is the only game for the Lady Cardinals this week. They observe an open date Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Cardinals, 16-10 and 7-8, are scheduled to return to action Wednesday at Carthage against Panola. Game time is 7 p.m.

The next home game for Coach Kris Baumann’s squad, which had Saturday off, is Saturday against Paris at 4 p.m.

ON THE AIR

Wednesday’s Lady Cardinal game against Angelina will be webcast by the Cardinal Sports Network at www.tvcc.edu. Pregame programming begins at 5:20 p.m.

Saturday’s Cardinal game against Paris will also be webcast. Pregame programming starts at 3:50 p.m.

Cardinal Pride luncheon scheduled

The next Cardinal Pride Luncheon is scheduled Monday at Ole’ West Steak House, starting at noon.

The price for the all-you-can-eat buffet lunch is $9.

The event provides boosters, fans, staff and the community the opportunity to hear from our coaches and interact with our athletic staff and athletes.

There will be door prizes.

VOLLEYBALL

Coach Tosha Spain has announced five signees:

  • Victoria Hesson (5-11, RS/S, Porter High School)
  • Alexis Bogiorno (5-5, S, Rains High School)
  • Ashlynn Caldwell (6-2, M, Cypress Creek High School)
  • Lauren Fernandez (6-0, RS, Oak Ridge High School)
  • Brittney Griffith (5-0, M, Archer City High School)

The Lady Cardinals were 18-12 last year and qualified for the regional tournament for the first time.

The 2013 season will be the fourth year of the program.

The Lady Cardinals begin a three-date home stand today. They play Grayson at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Cain Park.

Saturday, the Lady Cardinals are also scheduled to be at home, facing Grambling State in doubleheader action at 1 and 3 p.m. Former Lady Cardinal Amanda Lester plays for Grambling State.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The No. 1-ranked Lady Cardinals take to the road for the final time during the regular season Saturday, going to Jacksonville for a 4 p.m. tipoff.

Coach Elena Lovato’s squad is 25-1 on the year and 12-0 in conference. Jacksonville is 13-11 and 6-5 after a 60-50 win against Panola at home Thursday night.

In the first meeting at Cardinal Gym last month, the Lady Cardinals nabbed a 74-53 win against Jacksonville.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be at home next Wednesday against Angelina at 5:30 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Cardinals do not play Saturday. Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Carthage next Wednesday to face Panola at 7 p.m.

Coach Kris Baumann’s squad is 16-10 on the year and 7-8 in conference.

TVCC Sports Notes: Lady Cardinals keep on rolling

The Lady Cardinals moved to No. 1 in the nation Wednesday morning and then went out that night and scored a hard-earned 64-45 win on the road against Kilgore.

Coach Elena Lovato’s squad, now 25-1 overall and 12-0 in Region XIV Conference, had just eight players in uniform due to injuries and illness. They played the second half with seven players when Adut Bulgak was injured in the opening 30 seconds of the second half.

The Lady Cardinals led 25-17 at the half.

Shannon Smith paced the Lady Cardinals with 14 points. Kyhonta Doughty had 10, Bulgak nine and Julianne Anchling and Savannah Carter eight each.

Shlonte’ Allen (injury) and Roddricka Patton (illness) did not play.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to travel Saturday to Jacksonville for a 4 p.m. It will be the Lady Cardinals’ last road conference game of the season. They finish with three home games.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Cardinals fell 79-57 to 22nd-ranked Kilgore on the road Wednesday night.

Kilgore outscored the Cardinals 29-15 in the final 12:04 of the first half to pull away and open to a 41-28 halftime lead. With 10:00 left in the game, Kilgore was up 61-39.

Karon Phillips, Jarion Henry and Dominique Elliott scored eight points each to lead the Cardinals. Octavius Ellis, Carl Porter and Jhaustin Thomas netted seven each.

The Cardinals are open Saturday and return to action next Wednesday at Carthage against Panola.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to play their home opener Friday against Grayson at Cain Park. Doubleheader action is set to begin at 1 p.m.

Coach Ashley Johnston’s squad carries a 6-4 season record into the contest after going 3-3 in the Cow Town Tournament in Fort Worth last weekend. The Lady Cardinals had 53 hits in the six games.

Saturday, the Lady Cardinals are also scheduled to be at home, facing Grambling State in doubleheader action at 1 and 3 p.m. Former Lady Cardinal Amanda Lester plays for Grambling State.
