OBITUARY: Howard Burton ‘Slick’ Alfred

Slick 2Howard Burton “Slick” Alfred, 80, of Athens, passed away, Jan. 2, 2014, in Tyler. He was born Nov. 23, 1933, in Tyler, the youngest child of Ross and Elizabeth Burton Alfred.

Known as H.B. “Slick” Alfred, he spent 42 years in law-enforcement, first as a Texas Highway Patrolman, then as a Texas Ranger, and finally as Sheriff of Henderson County, from 1988 through 2000.

He graduated from Tyler High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Soon after, he joined the Texas Department of Public Safety and later the Texas Rangers, first stationed in Dallas and coming to Athens in 1976. As a Ranger, he served Henderson, Freestone, and Navarro counties.

With his first wife Iva Jones Alfred, Slick had four children, two of whom survive: Janet Alfred Feltman and her husband Billy of Lufkin and Julia Alfred Dotson and her husband Bobby of Jacksonville. Preceding him in death were two sons, Phillip Wayne Alfred and David Howard Alfred. In addition to his parents, Slick is also preceded by his sisters, Betty Marie Lee and Patsy Bryans, and his brother William Ross Alfred.

Slick was married in May of 1979 to Mary Alice Insley Harrup who survives. Three step-children also survive: Mary Webb, her husband Gary, of Charleston, S. C.; Paul Harrup III of McKinney, TX ; and Angus Harrup and his wife Tinika, of Highland Village, TX.

Slick is survived by seven dearly-loved grandchildren: Carrie Lynn Glaze, Casie G. Matthews (John), Chelsie G. Page (Eric), Alicia D. Ferguson (Dan), Kyle Dotson, Aaron Alfred (Tara), and Candace A. Donnell (Damon), step-grandchildren Ian and Ava Harrup, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Slick was fond of nieces and nephews Sharon Miller, Karen Lee, Jeff Lee, Melissa Hughes, Mark Alfred, and Gary Alfred.

Slick loved his law-enforcement friends, many of whom gathered with him regularly at the Old West Steak House, and he loved fishing with his special friend and neighbor, the late Ginger Murchison.

A private burial will take place at Bascom Cemetery in Smith County on Saturday, Jan. 4, led by an Honor Guard of Texas Rangers.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Rebecca Love and Rev. Dr. Joe Warren officiating. A reception for friends and family will follow in the Activities Building.

OBITUARY: Carroll Martin ‘Pete’ Stockard

Services for Carrol Martin “Pete” Stockard, 80, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.mm Saturday in Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with Rev. Larry Fondren officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Stockard died December 24, 2013 at his residence.

He was born February 19, 1933 in Henderson County to the late Earl Martin and Nellie Lee Bevel Stockard and had been a lifelong resident of the county. Following graduation from Athens High School in 1951, Pete served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After fulfilling his military obligation he attended Henderson County Junior College two years. He served a 25-year tenure with J. C. Penney Company, Inc. as a retail salesman. He later worked for Athens Brick Company 18 years retiring in 1998. Mr. Stockard was a member of Landmark Baptist Church. Pete was an avid bird lover and enjoyed feeding and watching many. He enjoyed gardening and watching old western movies and Perry Mason reruns. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and devoted to his family.

He was preceded in death by his brother George Stockard and a sister Addie Weeze.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years Murleen Anding Stockard; son Douglas Martin Stockard and wife Lanee`; daughter Cynthia Martel Wilbanks and husband Brian, all of Athens; sister Joy Wood, College Station; grandchildren Brandy Boswell, Candace Ballard, Lacie Grinstead, Tommy Stockard; five great grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces. 

Pallbearers will be Tommy Stockard, Gary Steddum, Tristan Grinstead, Glenn Leopard, Bill Newbill, Jerry Corrico.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Samaritan Sunday School Class of Landmark Baptist Church and Benson’s Morning Coffee Club.

OBITUARY: Charles Marion Jackson, Sr.

Charles Marion Jackson, Sr. was born on November 28, 1925 in Corsicana and passed away on December 20, 2013 in Dallas.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Jackson; sons, Charles M Jackson Jr., and Randy Jackson and wife, Stacey; four, grandchildren, Brian, Brandi, Victoria, and Ashley; and sister, Jeanene Grade.

Charles worked in construction for many years and was in the Garland Emergency Corp. He served in the United States Navy where he witnessed the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima.

Charles married Leona Richter in 1951. He will be remembered by his loved ones and friends.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Restland Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Restland Memorial Park.

OBITUARY: Edwin “Ed” Arthus

Funeral Services for Ed Arthus, 80, of Malakoff, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 at First Baptist Church Malakoff with Pastor Jody Jones officiating.  A private family graveside will be held at a later time at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Athens.

Mr. Arthus passed away Sunday, December 22, 2013 in Malakoff. 

 Edwin Linder Arthus was born January 22, 1933 in Cross Roads, Texas to Ernest Arthus and Frances Whitman Arthus.  He joined the United States Army in 1952 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal before his honorable discharge in 1954 to serve in the Army Reserves for another six years.  He then married the love of his life Dorothy Cox in Athens in 1954.  He retired from Texas Clay Industries after a career that spanned over 29 years.  Ed was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church Malakoff and taught Sunday School for many years. He was an avid fisherman and a legendary fisherman in the area.  He also loved dominoes and golf. He was a dedicated member of the community spending countless hours volunteering as a Boy Scout leader, a baseball coach and President of the Rotary Club, being named Man of the Year.  He was a family man who was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Frances Arthus, his daughter, Pam Patterson, and two brothers, James Arthus and Franklin Arthus.     

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Dorothy Arthus of Malakoff; one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Charlie Bullock of Malakoff; one son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Jeri Arthus of Pittsburg, Texas; two brothers, Lloyd Arthus, Bobby Arthus; two sisters, Alphinell Berry, Betty Gilmore; five grandchildren, Chris Hampy of Ft. Worth, Texas, Kelley Silva of Frisco, Texas, Eric Hampy of Austin, Texas, Josh Haney of Malakoff, Nicholas Arthus of Pittsburg, Texas, and six great grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jerry Stone, Jim Richardson, Grady Billips, Bob Farmer, Walter Bingham, and Jim Owens.

Visitation will be held Monday, December 23, 2013 from 12:00-2  p.m. at First Baptist Church Malakoff.

Funeral services for Wanda Engledow, 75, of Athens, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with Pastor Perry Smith officiating.

Mrs.Engledow passed away on Dec. 18, 2013 in Tyler.

Wanda Janice McPearson Engledow was born Nov. 25, 1938, in Marthaville, Louisiana to Charles Willie McPhearson Sr. and Gladys Ilene Middleton McPhearson. She was a Baptist and a loving homemaker who enjoyed cooking and quilting. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all she knew and loved.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charles McPhearson Jr.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Johnny Engledow of Athens; one daughter, Julia Vulpo of Tyler; five sisters, Jean Boyles of Bigelow, Arkansas, Vera Rothlisberger of Showlow, Arizona, Elaine Gibbs of Malvern, Arkansas, Pamela Moore of Campti, Louisiana, Donna McPhearson of Natchitoches, Louisiana; one brother, Eugene McPhearson of Abitta Springs, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Jonathan Hicks, Sara Parker, Joseph Hicks, Donald Vulpo, Dominic Vulpo and four great grandchildren, Keely Parker, Alezandra Garner, Jaxon Hicks and Jexon Hicks.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 from noon – 2 p.m. at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home.
