TOP 5 STORIES OF THE WEEK

Story 1 — Groundbreaking for Splash Pad: Organizers from the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club and the City of Athens held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning for the planned Kiwanis Park Splash Pad.
Why it’s important: Officials said most of these projects take at least two years … organizers in Athens broke ground in six months.

Story 2 — George P. Bush to take part in fundraiser: The Cedar Creek Veterans Foundation has announced that George P. Bush will be playing in this year’s Golf Classic on May 6.
Why it’s important: The CCVF’s summer events — the golf tournament and July 4 air show — have become big events in the county.

Story 3 — TVCC Lady Cards win 7th title: The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals won the NJCAA National Championship last Saturday night. The school has back-to-back titles now, and has appeared in the championship game in three consecutive years.
Why it’s important: The Lady Cardinals are the premier junior college women’s basketball team in the nation.

Story 4 — Local ladies visit every courthouse: Wanda Ola Richardson, 91, and her daughter, Roberta Davis, visited every courthouse in Texas over the course of eight years.
Why it’s important: Because quests are cool.

Story 5 — Zoning approved for old hospital: The Athens City Council OK’d zoning this week that moves forward a plan to turn the old Henderson County Memorial Hospital into an assisted living and retirement facility.
Why it’s important: Because the old hospital has been falling into ruin for years.

1. The 53rd Annual Henderson County Livestock Show starts today. We’ll be bringing you photos and reports from the Fairpark Complex all week long. You can check out the week’s schedule of events here. 

2. Belle Mills is out of ICU, sitting up and even gave everyone a thumbs up! You can keep up with the 8-year-old’s recovery from getting kicked in the head by a horse last week on her Facebook Page. 

3. Officials of the Athens Splash Pad are ready to turn dirt. 

4. The Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual banquet tonight at the CCL Country Club. 

5. Hope Springs Water will be hosting a World Water Day expo Saturday, March 23. The event will feature autographed Duck Dynasty memorabilia.

Story 1 — Outpouring of love for Belle: The community rallied around the Mills family after 8-year-old daughter Belle was kicked in the head by a horse Monday night.
Why it’s important: This shows what community can really be about.

Story 2 — It’s Livestock Show time: The 53rd Annual Henderson County Livestock Show gets under way Monday, March 18.
Why it’s important: Hundreds of kids from all corners of the county will be involved in the event.

Story 3 — Triathlon time: The Cain Center is hosting its annual triathlon Saturday.
Why it’s important: Motorists need to be aware that there will be bike riders and runners out on the road.

Story 4 — Lady Cards are #Chasing7: The TVCC women’s basketball team leaves for Salina, Kansas Saturday morning to try and repeat as national champions.
Why it’s important: If the ladies win, it will be the seventh title for the program.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW TODAY

1. The Cain Center will be hosting its annual triathlon Saturday, March 16. Motorists need to be aware that there will be bike riders and runners out on the road. The route will go out Loyola, then turn Southbound on 19, then turn West on loop 7, and will remain on the loop to 31. At 31 they will turn around and come back on the same route. For the run portion they will have Robbins Road closed off from Cain Park II to the bridge.

2. Disciples Clinic, which provides medical care for low-income residents, is in need of volunteers. (The Review)

3. The TVCC Lady Cardinals held media day yesterday. The women will take off Saturday morning for Salina, Kansas and pursuit of the school’s 7th national championship. Here is a Facebook photo album from the TVCC Facebook Page. #Chasing7

4. The Athens Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting, handing out awards to members. 

5. There are a few tickets remaining for Monday night’s Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Award’s Banquet. 

WHAT YOU MISSED

The most talked about (and prayed about) subject in the county yesterday was the condition of 8-year-old Belle Mills, who was kicked in the head by a horse Monday night. A post announcing the formation of a bank account to help the family with expenses was seen by more than 44,000 people, and a post announcing t-shirts in support of Belle was seen by more than 4,000.

1. Belle Mills, 8, is in Children’s Hospital in Dallas after being kicked in the head by a horse Monday. The community is rallying around her and her family. 

2. Teams are forming for Relay for Life, which is scheduled for May 10 at the Henderson County Fairpark Complex. (The Review)
