I had a proud mama moment the other day.

My daughter, just shy of 4, worked up the courage to jump into the swimming pool all by herself. From the side, mind you, not the steps.

That may not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme, but to a 4-year-old, it is a very Big Deal. In the past, she demanded that her father or I catch her, refusing to risk the water splashing into her face or rushing over her head. But then something clicked, and now jumping in from the side is all she wants to do.

East Texas Giving Day in Henderson County

Tuesday, April 24, is East Texas Giving Day.

The website says, “East Texas Giving Day brings the region together as one community, raising money and awareness for our local nonprofits during the 18-hour online giving challenge. We inspire people to give generously to nonprofits making our region stronger, creating a thriving community for all.”

You can donate to nonprofits at EastTexasGivingDay.Org until midnight.

Michael Hannigan visited the square this afternoon during the local East Texas Giving Day celebration from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Watch the video above for more information about local nonprofits.

Black History Committee receives TVEC grant

On Thursday, April 5, the Trinity Valley Electric Co-op (TVEC) Charitable Foundation awarded a $2,000 grant to the Henderson County Black History Committee.

The TVEC Charitable Foundation is funded by donations from Operation Round-up. Operation Round-up is a voluntary program that allows TVEC members to round up their monthly electric bills to the next whole dollar amount. The portion that is rounded up goes to the TVEC Charitable Foundation and may be used to award grant requests to local charitable organizations.

Family Peace Project looks for Teen Dating Violence PSA Video Contest entries

Teenagers face many potentially life-altering choices daily when it comes to relationships. The Family Peace Project (FPP) hosts its 2nd Annual Love is Not Abuse PSA video contest. The goal is to help teens learn how to make the right decisions when it comes to relationships.

“Teen Dating Violence is an issue that affects many of our youth either directly by being victimized, or indirectly by knowing a victim of dating violence,” said Mary Farmer, Executive Director of The Family Peace Project. “It’s alarming and we must educate our kids to see the signs.”
