Members of the Athens ISD Board of Trustees were presented with a review of the district’s annual fiscal year audit report during the recent regular meeting.

“The report is very positive,” said J.W. Lambright of the local accounting firm Smith, Lambright & Associates.

The report indicated that Athens ISD’s general fund balance is very strong and appropriate for the district’s routine operations. The fund balance at fiscal year end, June 30, 2016, increased compared to the previous year.

AHS Haunted House opens Saturday-Monday

The Athens High School Haunted House will be scaring the bejeebers out of people this Saturday, 3-7:30; Sunday, 5-10; and Monday, 6-10. Entry fee is $5. No one under 14 allowed without a parent or guardian. The haunted house is located at the AHS Annex, 708 E. College Street.

City of Athens moves forward with certificates of obligation for municipal building plan

The Athens City Council approved going forward with its plan to issue certificates of obligation for up to $12.5 million Monday night.

The certificates of obligation (debt) will provide the majority of funding for the $12.8 million Capital Improvement Projects plan the council approved in August. In previous meetings, City officials said they expect to borrow about $12.17 million for the projects.

Included among those capital improvements are $10.5 million for a municipal buildings project (Cain Civic/Aquatic Center, police department) and $1.4 million for the Texan Theater.
