HCPAC searching for quotes for anniversary stories

“The paragraph starting with ‘I don’t want to get rich’ is pure gold. Dennis Gilmore taught me a long time ago, if you are in it for the money or fame, you are in it for the wrong reason and to quit while you can. That’s what it is all about. In my childhood, one of the only releases I had were those moments on stage, before the show, with the lights out. I can smell the theatre even now. If this is your reasoning for following your dream, you have already won. No one can take that from you. Beautiful, just beautiful.” — Lauren (Hopper) Roerick (former YES! Company Member)

anniversaryWhen that small band of volunteers got together back in 1964 to discuss the possibility of developing a live theatre in Athens, I wonder if they thought it would still be running strong 50 years later.

From those early beginnings where shows were presented at the Junior College, to the move into the facility on Gibson Road, to the construction of the new 10,000 square-foot theatre on the same property, Athens Little Theatre has gone through some major moves that included 25 years of all volunteer-directed shows and the major renovation of the first theatre.

In 1989, the Board of Directors made the bold decision to hire a full-time executive director for the purpose of expanding the programs to a regional level. The theatre added a full youth program that brought a new level of involvement to the theatre. Over the past 25 years, the theatre has expanded to 8-10 shows a year Continue reading “HCPAC searching for quotes for anniversary stories”

Williams stepped down at AISD for daughter’s sake

By Michael V. Hannigan

When Athens ISD school board member Raymond Williams stepped down last week just a month after being reelected, the big question was why. Well, I spoke to Mr. Williams today and the answer was pretty simple: He put being a father first.

Mr. Williams stepped down so that his daughter can become a teacher at Athens ISD. Jordan was the 2007 valedictorian from Athens High School and has earned not only her bachelor’s degree, but also her master’s.

She will be joining Athens ISD as an elementary teacher.

Because of nepotism rules, Jordan could not be hired while her father was on the school board.

“I think she’ll do a great job,” Mr. Williams said. “I think she’ll do much better as a teacher than I ever did as a school board Continue reading “Williams stepped down at AISD for daughter’s sake”

Head celebrates 50 years as attorney

Fred Head

Athens attorney Fred Head and Tyler attorney and outgoing State Bar President Buck Files were recognized at the State Bar of Texas Convention in Dallas on Friday, June 21, as having served as Texas lawyers for 50 years. Pictured, from left, are Fred Head, Buck Files’ wife Robyn, Buck Files and Head’s wife Marsha as they visit following former State Bar President Files’ farewell speech at the 50-year lawyer recognition luncheon. Both Files and Head, who served Smith, Henderson and other East Texas counties as State Representative for 14 years, maintain active law practices from their downtown offices in Athens and Tyler, respectively. After their visit, Files and Head issued the following joint statement: “We and our wives feel very blessed to be a part of the East Texas Family of hardworking, God-fearing individuals and we give thanks that the Lord has watched over us and given us the strength and good health to continue our active work in behalf of the people of Texas.” (COURTESY PHOTO)
