The Pinnacle Women’s Club held its annual Philanthropic Luncheon last month, during which 15 15 non-profit and charitable organizations received donations.
Patsy Dehn, Philanthropy Chair, opened the meeting by expressing thanks to all of the area’s residents who supported the PWC Garage Sale last October.
Dehn said, ”So far this year, the PWC has returned $30,000 to the community through charitable donations, college scholarships and community projects. The funding for our philanthropic endeavors comes from the garage sale and other fundraising projects.”
“The Philanthropy Committee members Kay Robinson, Liz Lee, Monica Bell and Gloria Barrett performed many interviews and selected these organizations here today to receive this year’s donations. We are proud to recognize the achievements of these special organizations,” she said.

It’s time to rodeo up!
The 5th annual Trinity Valley Community College National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association-sanctioned rodeo is scheduled Friday and Saturday at the Henderson County Fair Park Complex.
Competition is scheduled at 7:30 each night with slack beginning at noon Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. Each night during the performance, children can compete in a calf scramble to win prizes.
“We always have a lot of fun with that (calf scramble),” Bratton said. “It’s a great way for kids to come out and find out what we’re all about.”
TVCC rodeo coach Brent Bratton said approximately 400 contestants, representing 20 college and universities, are expected to compete. Expected to compete with Bratton’s talented squad are Hill College, Southwest Texas Junior College, McNeese State University, Northeast Texas Community College, Lone Star Community College – Montgomery, Panola Junior College, Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas A&M University – Kingsville, and Wharton County Junior College.
Each NIRA member college has its own club composed of student members and sponsored by a faculty advisor who supervises the club’s activities. Each year, a men’s team consisting of six members and a four-member women’s team is chosen from each school. These team members travel to the regional rodeos competing against other NIRA member schools. Those not chosen for the team may compete on an individual basis and still be eligible for all prizes except those given to the team. The top three contestants in each event from each of the NIRA’s 11 regions qualify to compete in the CNFR. The top two men’s teams and women’s teams also qualify from the regions.
The TVCC roping team of Wenceslao “Lightning” Aguilera and Kolby “Thunder” Miller is currently ranked No. 1 in the region.
General admission tickets are $5 each and may be purchased in advance at Lone Star Western Wear in Athens, or on the night of the performance at the gate.
All proceeds generated by the rodeo are given back to the students to further their education, according to Bratton.

Services for James Harold Rains, 74, of Brownsboro, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at Eubank Chapel with Bro. Lee Evans, Bro. Bob Sexton, and Bro. Danny Bristow officiating, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton.
Burial will be in Haven of Memories, Canton, Texas. He passed away Feb. 6, 2013 in Tyler, Texas.
Mr. Rains was born Nov. 5, 1938 in Florence, Ala., to Harold “Jack” and Bessie Cramer Rains.
James grew up in Rogersville, Ala. and served in the National Guard for two years and then four years in the Navy where he was a Crash Fire Rescue Fire Fighter on the USS Bon Homme Richard (A CVA 31). James lived in Tyler from 1957 until 1991 when he moved to Chandler. He was a member of the West Lake Baptist Church of Chandler, the Odd Fellows, and the American Tae Kwon Do Association where he earned a first degree black belt. He was a Union Steward at TRANE. He enjoyed fishing and was a Bass Tournament Fisherman with the Bass TRANE Club and retired after 30 years at TRANE.
James was preceded in death by his parents; brother Johnny Rains; sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Jim White; uncle Levoy Rains; cousins Galen and Sara Rains; mother-in-law Rosie Martin.
Surviving are wife of 46 years, Ray Rains of Brownsboro; son John and Melissa Rains of Brownsboro; grandson Maxwell Rains; grandson Hank Rains; sister Ellen Rains of Rogersville, Ala.; sister Gladys Goode of Lawton, Okla.
Pallbearers are Corey Rains, Scott Bell, Brad Smith, Duane Sweitzer, and Lou Turner.
Family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Larry Kenneth Gideon, 72, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 at Fellowship Baptist Church of Athens with Mike Dean and C.O. Jackson, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Rome Cemetery. He passed away Monday evening in Tyler, Texas.
Larry was born on March 18, 1940 in Athens to Lester Horace and Mattie Sue Hopson Gideon and was a lifelong resident of Henderson County. He attended school in Athens and was a member of the graduating class of 1958. He graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Henderson County Junior College in 1960 and also attended Stephen F. Austin University. He was united in marriage with Janet Trammell on Jan. 30, 1965.
Larry was employed in electrical and plumbing sales for his entire career and had worked for Texas Wholesale, National Supply and Spencer’s Hardware Store. He will be remembered as a tireless and honest man, with a great sense of humor, who provided well for his family. He loved to travel and spend time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a long time member of the Fellowship Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was known as a godly man whose Christian influence touched those around him, and there is peace and comfort knowing that he is with his Heavenly Father. He was a dearly loved husband, father, G-Pa, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Billy Mack Gideon.
Larry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet Trammell Gideon of Athens; son Greg Gideon and wife Alisa of Rockwall; daughter Julie Holt and husband Kelly of Mabank; sister Barbara McCown and husband Steve of Spring; grandchildren Garrett Gideon, Abby Gideon, Cy Holt, and Case Holt.
Pallbearers include Bobby Cooper, Kelly Smith, Adron Neill, Doyle Trammell, Garrett Gideon and Kelly Holt.
The family will receive visitors at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.

HOT TOPIC: Today is the 100th day of school, and that’s a big deal at the elementary level. Remember, some of the youngest students are still learning to count that high.
South Athens Elementary School really cranked up the fun this morning with a celebration that brought together school and community leaders from a variety of professions.
“There are a lot of people involved in making a school work,” SAE Principal Eugene Buford said. “The teachers wanted to turn this back toward the community.”
The school did that by having students visit 10 stations showing the different professions that help build a school community. Those included:
Gardeners (Henderson County Master Gardeners … and if this one seems a little out of the ordinary, you haven’t seen the beautiful garden behind the school)
Agriculture (Extension Agent Rick Hirsch was on hand)
School personnel (which included AISD Superintendent Blake Stiles)
Grocery/Food (Walmart brought an 18-wheeler)
Electrical (TVEC)
City Workers (including City Administrator Pam Burton)
Police (sheriff, APD, constable and AISD police)
Fire
Church Leaders
Health Care
