Martha Ann (Marti) Robertson was born Dec. 21, 1934 in Morganfield, Ky. and was the second child of Lucille and Joseph Francis (Frank) Wathen. She graduated from Saint Vincent’s Academy in Morganfield and moved to Louisville, Ky. to begin her career in the insurance and finance field. Martha returned to Morganfield to take a new position in the field of finance and that is when she met her future husband, L.H.(Dick) Robertson, who was to become the joy of her life. After her marriage to Dick on Sept. 29, 1956 she accompanied her husband to Texas A & M University and was employed in Schaffer’s bookstore, Cushing Library and the Memorial Student Center. Martha Ann took great pride in her PHT(Putting Hubby Through) degree from Texas A&M. She was proud of the Aggie ring she received for helping Dick obtain his degree in Petroleum Engineering, but she had even more pride in her two sons, Randy and Mark, who were born in Bryan, Texas during that time. After graduating Texas A&M, Dick began his career in the petroleum industry and Martha and their children (which by now included Frank and Robin as well as Randy and Mark) accompanied him in his travels around the world. Martha made a wonderful home for her husband and children Continue reading “Obituary: Martha Ann (Marti) Robertson”

Call for donations: AISD Back to School Bash

Back to School Bash

Athens ISD is getting ready for its annual Back to School Bash … and they need your help.

This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 10, at the high school.

“The Back to School Bash is an event where parents and their children can come to get needed immunizations and information from the school the child will be attending and meet some of the staff,” AISD Parent Liaison Yadira Chairez wrote in a letter. “Also, we work with the HELP Center to provide school supplies and backpacks for children in need.”

This year, AISD is hoping to pump up the event in an effort to get more families to attend. Chairez said the school would like to include bounce houses and hot dogs and drinks, giving it a festival feel. Continue reading “Call for donations: AISD Back to School Bash”

Around Malakoff: Getting ready for Christmas in July

Christmas will be here before you know it. Really before you know it. Like in another week or so here in Malakoff, where downtown merchants are getting out their Christmas decorations for their second annual Christmas in July event. And this year they plan to have 12 days of it, like the song, having some special event every day, starting Friday, July 19 and going through Tuesday, July 30. There will be an art show, and a couple of teas, and a book sale, and cash drawings, and demonstrations, and I don’t know what all. There will be refreshments in many shops, and of course, extra special specials. My Cedar Lake companies are going to be participating by offering some checkups like blood pressure, glucometer and oximeter readings, and whatever else we can think of. Maybe we’ll even weigh you if you want us to. The list of events will be elsewhere in the paper, and in Henderson County Now and all over the Internet. I sure don’t have room to list them all here. Don’t miss the fun!

I got a late birthday present last week when my daughter Liz and daughter Tina and her whole family took me blueberry picking at Echo Springs Blueberry Farm. That was fun. I’ve posted a lot of pictures of that on www.facebook.com/aroundthetown. They have great muffins and free coffee Continue reading “Around Malakoff: Getting ready for Christmas in July”
