When most 7-year-old girls are asked what they want for their eighth birthday, the answer is usually a new doll or maybe even a puppy. When Amanda Beets asked her 7-year-old daughter Rachel what she wanted, the answer blew her away. Rachel wants 900 pairs of shoes, but not for herself.

Rachel Beets turns eight on Jan. 31, 2014 and for her birthday she wants to give 900 pairs of shoes to local children who have been neglected and abused.

Rachel’s vision is that all kids have shoes to play outside, just like her. She loves shoes and believes that all children deserve a pair of “fast runners.” After all, to a 7-year-old, brand new shoes make you run super fast.

Rachel’s parents weren’t sure they could make something like this happen when they first heard this is what she wanted for her birthday. But, after only a week of passing it around on Facebook, a group Amanda created called “Rachel’s Happy Feet” has grown to over 300 members and is gaining tremendous support from the communities in Henderson County.

“Rachel’s Happy Feet” will be giving collected shoes to the Rainbow Room with Child Protective Services and Rachel will have a chance to meet the Rainbow Room president at the upcoming “Duck Run” on Sept. 28 at the Texas Freshwater Fishery Center. Around Malakoff: More awards for CLNH

Bear with me folks; it’s time for my semi-annual brag-on-my-own-company column. And could you blame me? Cedar Lake Nursing Home once more got singled out by Medicare and US News and World Report as one of the best nursing homes in the country, with another five-star rating. That’s big, folks. Last year we were the only one in something like a 10-county area. This year several more got five stars. South Place in Athens did, and so did Mabank Nursing Home. But we are the only ones anywhere around here who have got this award two years in a row.

And, if I may say so, we deserve it. Cedar Lake Nursing Home is a wonderful place. The people who work here are the best. It has been our pride and joy for 46 years now. But I guess we’ve been taking it for granted a little bit, because we totally forgot to celebrate our 46th anniversary last week. The reason Sonny remembered it—after the fact—is because one of our favorite former nurses (who now works at Beau’s nursing home) reminded Sonny she was born Continue reading “Around Malakoff: More awards for CLNH”

DA’s Office donates iPad mini

Texas Ranger iPad

District Attorney’s Office press release

Henderson County First Assistant District Attorney Mark Hall and Office Manager Betty Herriage present a brand new mini iPad to Texas Ranger Sergeant Michael Adcock. Many investigators around the county are now using the technology of the iPads during their investigations of criminal offenses. According to District Attorney Scott McKee, his office has also discovered the usefulness of the iPad in search warrants, courtroom technology and everyday tasks.

“The County even provided the judges with iPads so they can sign search warrants from home without the need for the investigator or officer to the leave the crime scene,” said McKee.

McKee indicated that in the first couple of months they have already used the iPads for judges to sign blood draw warrants which dramatically decreased the amount of time it takes for an officer to get a warrant.

“We are a no refusal county when it comes to felony level DWIs,” said McKee. “If you refuse and it is a felony DWI, we are going to seek a court-ordered blood draw and these iPads have now made it easier than ever.”
