Athens ISD board hears delinquent taxes report

Athens ISD press release

Last week, Athens ISD school board members heard a report by McCreary, Veselka, Bragg & Allen, the firm that collects the delinquent property taxes owed to the school district. According to the report, the percentage of collection on levied taxes is 98.56 percent for tax year 2014, 99.37 percent for tax year 2013, and 99.63 percent for tax year 2012.

“Those are outstanding results,” said Chief Financial Officer Randy Jones. “The school district benefits tremendously from the efforts of the Henderson County Appraisal District, Henderson County Tax Assessor/Collector, and McCreary, Veselka, Bragg & Allen.”

Trustees also approved a maximum payment of $58,086 to Virtual Communication Specialists of Athens, which represents 15 percent of the total cost for a project to improve Internet connectivity across the district. The remaining $329,156 is being funded through the federal E-Rate program, which financially assists school districts with technology expenditures.

“This will improve connectivity tremendously for our students and staff,” said AISD Technology Coordinator Tony Brooks. “We’re currently running up to 150 devices off wireless access points designed to handle no more than 100. So we’re desperate for more access points.”
