Around the Town: Great turnout for Cornbread & Scarecrow Festival

What a fantastic turnout we had for our annual Cornbread & Scarecrow Festival! The day started and ended with such good weather putting everyone in a very festive mood. Downtown and other local merchants opened early on Saturday and served up sales throughout their stores, drinks and snacks all day. We really appreciate everyone visiting our stores and supporting small, local businesses. Without you we can’t keep doing what we love.

The crowd at the community center this year was better than expected! Great food, very creative vendors selling their wares inside and out, so many dogs dressed in costume, they had to have two contests, face painting was a huge hit along with pumpkin painting and pumpkin seed spitting (which was won by a girl this year).

We had a motorcycle show downtown this year. Casey Williams, a local artist and cabinet maker, and his lovely wife Angela put together the bike show and did an amazing job! Together, with everyone’s help, the group raised over $1,400 to help a local, fellow biker involved in a bike accident. Casey auctioned off one of his best pieces as well. If you haven’t seen Casey’s art work, you can see some of his pieces downtown at the Rusty Circus on S. Terry St.

The winners were announced for the Scarecrow Contest – Business in City Limits: City of Malakoff

Outside City Limits: Shilo on the Lake and Residential: Jill Souza Davis. Great job everyone who participated and thank you.

For our cornbread contests the winners were – Traditional: 1st – June Farmer, 2nd: Edith Hicks; Non-Traditional: 1st: Trish Nicks, 2nd: Anita Rubsleava, 3rd: Delois Pagitt.

The Pumpkin cook-off the winners were – 1st: Paula Martin, 2nd: Cindy Calloway, 3rd: Delois Padgett

The day ended with a live show downtown in the pocket park by the Southbound Band and we really had a great turn out. Such a great use for this space too. This is a great group of local guys that play country and rock music and did not disappoint! Thanks Southbound. We hope to continue shows and events in the park on a regular basis and welcome ideas from everyone. Thanks for Loretta Humble for allowing us to use the park and for all you do to support us.

Thanks to everyone who helped with this year’s event, sponsored an event and/or participated in our scarecrow decorating contest. Thank you to Janet Brown for sending out her famous Lindy Mall emails and your continued support. Coming together is what it’s all about.

We are already planning ahead for our Christmas parade and the date has been set for December 10th at 10:00 am. More details will follow but let’s make this one the biggest we have ever had. I know we can do it! See you around …
