The Athens High School “Pride of the Hornets” Band completed step one in their pursuit of earning an 11th consecutive Sweepstakes Award. On Saturday, band members competed in the UIL District Marching Competition at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, receiving the highest-possible marks for their efforts and advancing to the Area Marching Contest this Saturday, also at SFA.

Bands are judged in three categories: music performance, musicianship and marching executions. The AHS band received a “first division” rating from each of the three judges.

“Band plays with excellent style and technique,” wrote a judge. “Thanks for all your hard work, effort, time, dedication and persistence. I enjoyed your performance today.”

The drum majors are seniors Mollie Davies and Kolemann Dooley. Directors for the band are Rusty Lay, Stephen Morman, Robyn Blanchard and Cheyenne Handorf. The band’s musical selections were: “Concord,” “Queen City March,” “Drum Major March” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
