Press release

For the second year in a row, the Athens Economic Development Corporation has been recognized for Economic Excellence by the Texas Economic Development Council. The 2016 recipients were announced last week at the TEDC’s Mid-Year Conference in Plano.

The objectives of the Economic Excellence Recognition Program are to provide recognition to economic development agencies that meet a threshold of professionalism, encourage professional staff membership and involvement in TEDC. AEDC was one of 33 communities recognized.

“The board and staff place a high value on professional development and accountability,” said Lisa Denton, AEDC’s Executive Director. “To receive this prestigious acknowledgment for AEDC’s efforts is quite an honor.”

The TEDC is made up of over 800 members representing more than 500 public and private economic development organizations, including more than 350 cities.

AEDC was established in May 1989 after voters elected to permit the Corporation to receive a dedicated half-cent sales tax to fund the economic growth of Athens. These funds can be used to assist companies with infrastructure, relocation, training and other needs.

In 2005, the AEDC became a Type B Corporation which provides for broader uses of the funds received
