6 Things to Know for the Week of Sept. 1

It’s the first week of September and teachers and students are hopefully settling down into a routine at school.

Here are 6 things to know in Henderson County this week:

1. Monday is Labor Day.  When I was growing up, it was the official end of the summer. I am not sure that is still true, but don’t forget schools, banks and government offices are closed.

2.  County commissioners could set a burn ban when they meet Tuesday morning. Looks like they will set a tax rate as well.

3. The Malakoff Tigers will play host to Daingerfield Friday night. This is a big game folks. Daingerfield is pretty much Texas high school football royalty and the fact they are coming to town is proof of how far the Malakoff program has come under Coach Jamie Driskell. This game is big enough that I’m trying to get the Dean of Henderson County Sports, Benny Rogers, in the office for a podcast. We will also be bringing the bus to Malakoff Friday night.

4. Speaking of football, Saturday the TVCC Cardinals will travel to Corsicana to take on Navarro in their second game of the season. The first game resulted in a win against No. 13 Tyler. Following that up with a win against the No. 8 Bulldogs on the road will give the Cardinals a great start on the year.

5. Staying with TVCC, did you know that the Lady Cardinal volleyball team is off to a sizzling, record-breaking 9-0 start to the year? And it has all come on the road.

6. As of Monday, there are only 114 days until Christmas. And for the boss, Hanukkah is coming fast, too.

As for me, I’ll be posting on Facebook (facebook.com/hendersoncountynow), our website (hctxnow.com), and on Twitter (@hctxnow). I am also starting my fifth month wearing blue in my Go Blue 365 project — so if you are interested, check out gofundme.com/goblue365.
