We have a lot to be proud of in the Henderson County 4-H program. In addition to having our youth compete and take part in projects on the county level, we also have members who represent us at the State and even National level.
In the past three years, we’ve had at least one of our members be eligible to compete on Team Texas at the National 4-H Shooting Sports competition which is held in Grand Island, Nebraska during the month of June.
This past summer, Leo Varos, a 16-year-old, from here in Athens was selected through an application process to be on the Compound Archery team along with three other youth from across the State. Leo’s father, Billy, also had the honor of being selected as the team’s coach.
The Compound Archery team placed 1st out of 26 states participating. Leo placed 2nd overall individually out of 103 archers in his discipline. Texas also took home the Sweepstakes award overall shooting competition areas (Smallbore Pistol, Recurve Archery, Muzzleloading, Compound Archery, Air Rifle, Air Pistol & Shotgun).
In addition to Leo’s accomplishments at National’s he also represented Texas 4-H at the Buckmaster Indoor World championship in Alabama last August and won the senior division on national television! He is also involved in USA Archery and has achieved many awards for his excellent marksmanship. We congratulate Leo on his accomplishments and look forward to following his archery career in the future!
