Congratulations, Brianna Grogan!

Athens High School senior (OF/UT) Brianna Grogan signed Tuesday with Southwestern University. Grogan is coming off of a great junior season in 2014 earning 2nd Team All-District Pitcher and was selected as a member All-District Academic team as well. She is also a member of the Lady Hornet Volleyball team and the AHS FFA program.

Grogan is also a member of the Pinnacle Early High School College program. Along with earning her high school diploma before attending Southwestern in the fall, she will graduate in June with her associates degree from Trinity Valley Community College in Athens. Concrete Poured for AHS Band Hall

AISD artWorkers pour the concrete foundation Tuesday for a new and larger band hall at Athens High School. The new band hall, which is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, will be built adjacent to the existing one. Just down the street at Athens Intermediate School, construction is under way on eight new classrooms. AISD Releases FAQ About Elementary School Realignment

Athens ISD administrators have received some questions in regard to the elementary school realignment which will become effective at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year. In an attempt to address potential concerns among the widest audience possible, the most common questions, with our responses, are compiled below. Please read on.

Q: Looking at the map, the area zoned for Bel Air is much smaller than the areas zoned for Central Athens and South Athens. Why is that?

A: This is a natural question to ask. Bel Air’s footprint on the map is much smaller than that of the other campuses. So it appears as though Bel Air will have far fewer students. Rest assured that is not the case. The disparity is a result of population density. There are neighborhoods immediately north and west of Bel Air where many school-aged children reside. By contrast, South and Central Athens, in order to net approximately the same number of students as Bel Air, must extend their boundaries into more rural areas. In those cases, an area on the map that represents several square miles might only account for a handful of students.

Traffic Stop Leads to Two Arrests

On March 30, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brad Beddingfield initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Curtis Dowdle for a traffic violation. During the stop, Beddingfield identified a passenger in the vehicle as Dwight Stevens.

Jose Rodriguez is likely to be the most accomplished powerlifter in the history of Athens High School. This past Saturday in Abilene, Rodriguez lifted a total of 1,145 pounds to become the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division 2 State Champion in the 132-pound weight class.

“He’s probably the most decorated powerlifter in Athens High School history,” said head powerlifting coach Craig Brown. “He’s a four-time state qualifier; he’s the regional record holder in two different weight classes for benchpress; a two-time medal winner and a state champion.” Continue reading “AHS’ Rodriguez wins state in powerlifting”
