Bel Air Students Read to Lakeland House Residents

IMG_7369ABOVE: Once a month, a group of children made up of one student from each second and third grade class at Bel Air Elementary walks to Lakeland House Assisted Living Center just down the road. Charitable Donations Sought to Continue Weekend Food Program at AISD

Four years ago, elementary teachers at Athens ISD began to report something heartbreaking to the administrative teams: some of their students were digging through the trash looking for food.

“We noticed a lot of kids trying to horde food from the cafeteria or dig through the trash looking for snacks,” said school counselor Cheri Mahan. “They were just so hungry because they weren’t getting the food they needed at home.”

At the time, Mahan’s daughter was attending the University of Texas at Tyler, where she was involved in promoting the East Texas Food Bank. “My daughter came home and mentioned the Backpacks for Kids program, and I said, ‘We need that,’” recalled Mahan. Larson Overall Winner at Lady Cards Run for Funds

10-25-14 Run 4 FundsKennedy Larson, a 12-year-old seventh-grader at Brownsboro Junior High, was the overall winner at the Trinity Valley Community College Run for Funds 5K held Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Cain Center in Athens. Members of the three-time-defending national champion Lady Cardinals basketball team were on hand for the event, as well as other supporters and runners. The Gun Barrel City Masonic Youth Rainbow Girls traveled to Greenville to participate in a joint meeting with the Sunshine Rainbow Girls Assembly on Saturday, Oct. 25. The girls were excited that McKenna Sanders, Grand Representative to Arkansas and a member of the Elmwood Assembly in Dallas, was able to join them for this meeting. Mrs. Donna Dean, Grand Deputy, was also in attendance and brought greetings to the girls. At lunch, the Banquet Hall was decorated in fall colors and motifs.
